When New Beet Market’s Jamie Pacheco and Nate Wildes presented at a SMM gathering in January 2016, they were on the verge of opening their doors to the public. The restaurant is owned by Seeds of Independence, a 501c3 that works with high-risk youth. Designed to support the group’s mission, the majority of New Beet’s profits go to Seeds, while Jamie serves as Managing Partner and Nate in Public Relations. New Beet has settled into its space on a former military base in Brunswick and is quickly building a clientele with its locally sourced foods and baked goods for the breakfast and lunch crowd.
Unique to New Beet Market is that it does a lot of work with area non-profits, most notably the public charter school – Harpswell Coastal Academy. HCA students intern for academic credit, learning about food production, sales and restaurant operations. In September, NBM will launch an institutional meals program with HCA and provide 60-75 school lunches daily throughout the school year.
When asked about any unexpected issues in these first months, Jamie reports being pleased overall. If anything, she says, “This location and its layout are so spacious, that it requires more staff than we expected in order to keep it running smoothly.” Jamie also notes New Beet continually adapts, based on input from the community, and will soon be selling beer and wine, as well as continuing to build catering/sandwich platter sales.
